Subwoofer sounds good. Gives my bookshelf system that extra Boom Boom. Satisfied with price too.
The sound from this sub was outstanding. I received the subwoofer promptly at a very good price. The directions took a little time to figure out, but upon proper study, the installation and adjustment were great. It has a nice feature that puts the sub into a standby like mode when no signal is present, like when muting during commercials. The adjustments were great, and I would recommend it highly.
It sounded decent, but once I stopped living in a 3rd floor apartment, I decided to take the plunge. I love it.Finally, the most consistent complaint I've read about this product was the auto-on feature. I am really enjoying this new addition to my Home Theater setup. I have yet to experience any distortion during normal/heavy use**. It barely uses any power unless it's actually performing anyway.**I leave the volume nob at about 80%, and just control the level in the mix from the receiver's menu. It's heavy. (aesthetically)If you're looking for the next step up from a very basic system, but you're not looking to drop $300+ on Bose or Klipsch, this is your happy medium.
When it comes on, you'll miss the first "hit" if there's an unexpected boom or explosion, and you'll hear a click when this happens. I purchased it (in conjunction w/ a Sony STR-DH500 5.1-Channel A/V Receiver) in an effort to upgrade from my old HTIB (Samsung HT-Z310T 5.1-Channel Home Theater Surround Sound System) which had a passive 6" subwoofer. If you're watching anything with a lot of dialogue, it will shut itself off. (which is good, considering subs are mainly wood & magnets) It has plenty of deep bass and mid-range punch, so long as you set the levels correctly. It even looks right at home next to my TV stand. After a week of trial and error, I opted to disable said feature and leave it on all the time. This seems to give me the perfect marriage of presence and boom, without entering into 'overkill' or distortion territory.
But I was torn between this sub and the Polk Audio sub. BUT, it can be hooked up another way if you only have a receiver with a Positvie/Negative sub output. There is also an option for it to go on standby/sleep mode. With this sub I find that if you put the volume on the sub at max, it looses a significant amount of clear sound and then becomes just a lound boom. You can run the speaker wires that go to your left and right speakers, to this sub and then to the speakers. If you want to.
Which works for new receivers. Me, I decided to keep my old sub hooked up since the line out for the sub on the receiver has the Positive/Negative output. Which does require some extra cable wire. And I'm VERY pleased with this choice. There is one thing I LOVED about this sub I have to say something about. This also gives you the option to hook up one to three (four if you have 7.1) to your audio receiver.
This sub does have the single plug cable input. This 10" is obviously better. Plus I now can get bass that can shake things off the wall without having to strain one sub.The sub also has a volume and Hz knob to adjust to your taste. The old one was only 8". I don't now why you would but to each their own. It can't be directly hooked up using Positive/Negative cable. There is a power button on the back left bottom part of the sub. It picks up the frequencey from those wires and performs like a normal sub.
I got this sub to replace the cheap one I got when I bought an audio receiver. Then I hooked up this sub using the back surround sound speakers. So this sub covers up what the other sub can't. Half way it sounds wonderful. I experienced no loss in quility from the speakers that were ran through the sub. I turn it on and off this way which I can see to be annoying for some people. I choose this one since so many people says that it has features the other doesn't. Otherwise the sleep mode can take care of that.
You can do this with your front or back speakers. And this sub doesn't have to be on for the speakers, that are ran through it, to work. The light on the front will turn red and will go into this mode when there is no frequencey detected. But I've heard that in sleep mode it can sometimes make a buzzing noise that can be nuisance.
After purchasing this subwoofer for my home theater system, I was quickly won over by the simplicity of the setup in terms of integrating it into my current system. Kudos to Sony on delivering an affordable yet pleasing subwoofer for the masses, and thanks to Amazon for your quick delivery. The fact that it's self powered is a plus that means you won't have to closely examine the compatability of your current power amp, just plug in and feel the thunder. One definite plus is that we have wood floors which really sets the stage for this potent little subwoofer. A worthy addition to any home system for sure and cost effective too.
